Abstract:

Scrapbooks containing original art work documenting the development of the "custom car" in California and the United States from the 1940s to 2000. The volumes contain photographs (in color, and black and white) as well as letters, comments, notes, autographs, and drawings by well-known custom car builders, including George Barris, Ed Roth, Tommy the Greek, Joe Bailon, Herb Martinez, Rod Powell, Frank DeRosa, Darryl Starbird, Larry Watson, Norm Grabowski, Dick Dean, Stanley Mouse, and Bill Reasoner, among others. His "car books" also include newsletters, under construction photos, and finished high-price show customs by John D'Agostino, Rick Dore, and Richard Zocchi, as well as cars built by one-car owners working alone. Scrapbook pages include collages assembled from photocopies or images cut from magazines and other various sources.

Tyler James Hoare was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1940 and came to California in 1966. A designer of restaurants and drive-ins in northern California, he is also a sculptor known for his early work in the Emeryville Mudflats and other public spaces in Berkeley. He serves as historian for West Coast Kustoms.
